What Kind of Entrepreneur Are You?
Running your business isn’t the same as leading your business.
When I started my business I had a dream – a vision. Pretty quickly that got buried under the daily drudgery of actually running my new business. It’s so easy to lose sight of that dream and at some point you're not running your business — it’s running you. One of the questions I get asked over and over again is HOW did I do it… how did I accomplish growing PostcardMania with no capital — and get it past that point of it running me? Difficult to put into a mere article, but I’d like to give you a few tips here that will at least get you looking at how you may accomplish this.
1. Get Some Help!
When things started to ramp up with PostcardMania, I hired an amazing administrator that is still here today — who manages all of my production and quality control, meet Melissa Bradshaw. Without a qualified, willing individual that sees your vision and wants to contribute to making it a reality, you’re stuck doing things that keep you from leading your business to the next level.
2. Manage Your Time
If you didn’t read last week’s newsletter, I talked about how to balance work and life as an entrepreneur. This is vital to growing your business, and goes into more detail in point one. Read it here:
Step 3: Get Away
Believe it or not, your best ideas rarely come while passed out from exhaustion on the floor of your office.
Every January I pull my senior management team out of the day-to-day grind of running PostcardMania and we have a week away to focus on the big picture. Where are we headed? What are our goals? Even if it’s just a long weekend, you absolutely need time away to let the small things go and cast vision for the future.
This year I decided to have a mid-year getaway to regain focus and assess our progress. It was the best decision ever! I’m going to do it every year from now on. The expansion that came from that time was priceless.
If you’re too busy to think big picture, you are in danger. If you want your business to grow, you must be a leader and gaining perspective is essential.

When I was reading this book, it was pretty creepy at first. It described my life so well that I felt like David Allen was spying on me when he wrote it. It's helped me organize my daily life so much that I'm not even through it yet and I'm buying it for other people!
