This is a different approach to postcard design that doesn't get seen very often: the front of the card is made up entirely of words. It's a good setup to the back of the card though and definitely gets interest. There's something else unique about this design, though, and it's on the back of the card.

The front of this card is very nice. I love the photo! It does a greatjob of speaking to its intended audience without the need for words.Without even a slogan, it compels the viewer to turn the card over.

The back is where all the words come in. A lot of them are not necessary. If the same message can be said in fewer words, then do so. Your viewers want only the most critical info, and they want it as briefly as possible.

I had my Art Director revise this design. Click through for the video and redesign.

In the days before the Internet, postcards were a one-shot, hit-or-miss marketing opportunity with customers. Businesses had to put everything on that postcard; there simply wasn't any other way to do it. Thanks to the digital revolution, though, that is no longer the case.

Instead, postcards are now simply the first step in an ongoing communication between you and your customers. There's no need to cram every last detail of the offer into the design - and if you're going to give up something of value (and hopefully by now you know how essential that is!) then you need to make sure you get something in return. Fortunately, you can accomplish both at once!

I was really pleased when this postcard came across my desk. It has a lot of strong points going for it. I guess they read our article about the 10 elements of an effective postcard design!

Read the article and take a look at the video critique. While it's true that we learn from our mistakes, it's just as important (if not more) to take what we can from successful designs too!
