What words should you put on your postcards?

(Note: PostcardMania SM offers full graphic design services for your postcards, including the copywriting. But, if you want to write your own copy, here are some useful tips you can use.)

Effective Copywriting

Writing effective copy for postcards isn't too hard when you know what actually works. After much trial and error we have found that the following points are always part of a successful postcard.

What Are You Going After?
Before you begin writing decide clearly what result you intend to cause with your words. Are you looking to generate leads? Do you actually want to get orders directly from your postcard? What specific action do you want taken as a result of your words? What method do you want used for response (phone, mail, email)?

Whatever you write should lead to this result. Get rid of anything that doesn't.

Be Sure You Know What The Readers of Your Words Want
A lot of different people may be able to benefit from what you sell. Still one target group WILL be most likely to buy. You can predict which group by comparing your list to your best existing customers, or if your business is new to the best customers of your competitors. Once you know who you should be contacting and what they want you can write in a way that will interest them and get them to take action.

Write like you are writing to a friend. In other words make your words personal.

Write About WIIFM (What's In It for Me), Just Like You are Your Own Customer
Customers don't care about you, your product, your company, or your professional qualifications. They only care about the benefit they get from buying your product or service. The only thing a customer wants to know about your 1/2 inch drill is that it's guaranteed to give them a 1/2 inch hole. Keep your ad copy focused on the benefits you provide.

Appeal to Your Audience's Heart, Not Your Audience's Mind
Your words should paint a picture of the feelings your customer will experience while enjoying the benefits provided by your product or service. Get them excited about feeling the benefits of your "offer" immediately.

Make Buying From You A Simple Decision
Give the people that you send your postcard to, one clear choice. That choice should be to take the action you want them to take.

You want them to respond to your postcard with an immediate call or order. Give them multiple ways to contact you so that they can take the path that is most convenient for them.

Make Them An Offer Only A Fool Would Refuse
Your offer is the "special opportunity" you're promoting (special pricing, a free consultation, a bonus of 2 for 1 with an order right now, etc.). People respond to your words because they want what you have described. The more they want what you offered the greater the response you'll get. Offer products and packages of products that you know your target audience wants and always include a reason to respond fast.

Make Sure Your Words And Your Offer Are Easy To Understand
Use simple language even a third grader will understand. Keep your offer simple and ask them to contact you.

When copywriting follow the 7 steps outlined above you will find yourself with lots of responses to your postcard promotions.
