I just got back from conference in New York City called BlogWorld. I paid $2,400 for two tickets for myself and my CMO, and that’s not including the hotel, airfare, meals, etc. Needless to say, this wasn’t a small expense. But while I was there, I realized just how important it is for me, as a business owner, to get away from the office and interact with people I don’t normally communicate with.
The conference was good and worth the money (as I’ll get to in a moment), but what’s important for this post is that it wasn’t, like, the most amazing, business-changing event of all time. The speakers were okay, but not of the energetic, motivational variety. The seminars were informative, but not revolutionary.
You may be asking, “So if it was just “okay” why do you think it was worth thousands of dollars to attend?” That’s a fair question, and here’s my answer…
In those seminars, when I was outside my normal day-to-day activities, I was in a much more focused and proactive place (mentally) than I am when I am reacting to the day-to-day duties of my job. Because of this, when I got a few “golden nuggets” (i.e. solid, actionable tips) out of one of the break-outs, I could see it much more clearly and actually take action, instead of it getting buried by the more “pressing” issues of the day.
From the few golden nuggets I got from the conference, I am sure I am going to make back the money I spent — and then some! It really doesn’t take that much return to justify the investment in going to conferences rather than just attending webinars. Of course, that is only if YOU ACTUALLY IMPLEMENT THE IDEAS YOU GET! But that can be the subject of another post…
I highly encourage you to make this type of outside learning a routine part of your schedule. The time away from your business does wonders for your perspective and ability to focus on growth.
